Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

The famous Puss in Boots made a terrible mistake - he lost his eighth life. It would seem, what's wrong?

Story and tone

The famous Puss in Boots made a terrible mistake – he lost his eighth life. It would seem, what’s wrong?

Except that cats have only nine of them, and the Cat too often risks his red fur. There is only one solution – to retire and live the rest of his ninth life peacefully and surrounded by his own kind.

However, long suffering in the company of domestic cats can not: the adventures are calling, it is necessary to find the mythical Last Supper before the villains, and at the same time find something new in life.

In the pursuit of lost lives, Puss in Boots has forgotten many important things – ironically, it is this adventure that will remind him of what is truly precious. Fear of death turns the hero into a real wimp and a coward – he runs away from those enemies he would have fought without a doubt before. And he will have to face that fear in order to be reborn as the legend he once was.
The most important topics that the animated film raises are friendship, love, found family and real dreams that can be fulfilled without any magic.

Visual imagination

We should not forget that the story of Puss in Boots is a sequel to “Shrek”, so there are a lot of hidden artifacts in the sequel to the original story, as well as to other pop-cultural issues.

Any adventure is not only an opportunity to learn something new, it’s also eerily entertaining. Once upon a time, a star fell from the sky and a dark forest formed in the place where it fell. It is in the middle of this forest and there is a wishing star.

Will it be easy to get it? It’s unlikely – so it’s very interesting to watch the cartoon. Thrilling scenes, pursuit, the race for the map, which should lead to the star – 102 minutes of cartoon pass unnoticed.

Voice performances

Among the positive characters are, of course, Cat himself, voiced by Antonio Banderas, Kitty Softy, voiced by Salma Hayek, and a new character, an unnamed orphan dog. He is, perhaps, a real gem of a cartoon: his outlook on the world and his principles of life are worth learning. He is a real psychologist, capable of setting the right path even for such a stubborn man as Puss in Boots.

Themes

In the sequel, Cat in Boots will have to resist a lot of new enemies. Among them: The Big Bad Wolf, the Three Bears and Masha, who steals their porridge, Tall Jack with his childhood trauma and dreams of becoming a real magician, and even the slightly insane cat lady who calls Cat Pickle can also be called a villain, because she erases his personality.

Pros

  • A deeper emotional arc focused on fear, death, and self-reflection.
  • Memorable new characters and antagonists.
  • Strong themes of friendship and found family.
  • Fast-paced and engaging adventure.
  • Clear connections to the Shrek universe.

Cons

  • Some villains feel more symbolic than fully developed.
  • The quest structure follows familiar fairy-tale patterns.
  • Certain themes may be unexpectedly serious for younger viewers.

Final verdict

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish uses a familiar fairy-tale adventure to explore surprisingly serious ideas about fear, identity, and what truly matters in life. While remaining entertaining and visually engaging, the film gives its hero a chance to grow beyond his legend and rediscover genuine values. It is a worthy continuation of the Shrek universe and a strong standalone story that proves even well-known characters can still evolve.
